Enhancing Outdoor Learning at Platte County Schools

“It’s so important for our students to be able to move as they learn and sometimes a change of scenery, or a different seating configuration, gives our students (and teachers) the inspiration they need to do their best learning.” – Jessica Hoffecker, Principal of Platte Purchase Middle School

Studies show that up to 50% of student engagement can come from Light, Air Quality and Temperature so outdoor learning presents and unique opportunity for curriculum delivery. Fre3dom Interiors is excited to continue its collaboration with the Platte County School District, focusing on innovative design solutions for outdoor spaces at Platte Purchase Middle School and Platte Purchase High School. This ongoing partnership reflects our shared commitment to creating flexible, collaborative, and inspiring learning environments for students.

The Vision: Flexibility and Collaboration

The cornerstone of our design philosophy for these projects is the concept of flexibility and collaboration. Traditional classroom settings, while effective in many ways, can sometimes limit the scope of learning and interaction. By expanding educational spaces to the outdoors, we aim to break down these barriers and provide students with opportunities to learn in diverse, stimulating environments.

The outdoor classrooms at Platte Purchase Middle School and Platte Purchase High School are designed to be multifunctional. They offer various seating arrangements and workspaces that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate different teaching styles and group sizes. This flexibility is crucial in fostering an adaptable learning atmosphere where students can thrive.

The Importance of Diverse Learning Environments

Research shows that students benefit greatly from learning in varied environments. Outdoor classrooms provide a change of scenery that can re-energize students and stimulate their minds in new ways. These spaces encourage physical movement, which is essential for young learners’ overall well-being. Additionally, being outdoors allows students to connect with nature, enhancing their sensory experiences and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.

Promoting Collaboration

One of the key goals of these outdoor spaces is to promote collaboration among students. The designs include communal tables, group seating, and open areas that facilitate group discussions and teamwork. By creating an environment that encourages interaction, we aim to help students develop critical social skills such as communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our partnership with the Platte County School District, we are eager to see the positive impact these outdoor classrooms will have on students’ learning experiences. Our dedication to creating innovative, student-focused environments is unwavering. By offering adaptable and engaging outdoor spaces, we aim to foster a love of learning and collaboration that will benefit students for years to come.
