Rushton Elementary: An Adaptive Learning Space

When Rushton Elementary School embarked on the exciting journey of designing their new building, they had a clear vision in mind: a welcoming, collaborative environment that catered to both students and staff. This meant moving beyond the traditional classroom setup to create a space that encouraged diverse learning styles. The Rushton Team partnered with Fre3dom Interiors to design and implement this transformation with furnishings individually selected to meet the needs of educators while increasing student engagement.

Designing for Flexibility and Comfort

The school’s leadership was eager to provide students with more than the conventional desk and chair. They sought an environment that would support various learning styles while offering student choice by incorporating soft, lounge seating, standard-height desks as well as tall, standing-height desks. This multi-tiered setup fosters different ways of engaging in classroom activities, allowing students to choose a setting that best suits their learning needs, whether that means sitting on a cozy lounge chair or standing at a tall desk for focus.

Fre3dom Interiors provided a wealth of design resources to help visualize these concepts before they were implemented. This ensured that teachers and staff could see how the space would come together, making adjustments where necessary to create the best possible learning environment.

Practical and Functional Education Furnishings

To further enhance the learning and teaching environment, Fre3dom provided a variety of practical, functional furnishings designed to promote organization and flexibility in the classroom:

  • Mobile desks with box/file storage and a matching task chair allowed teachers and students to stay organized while maintaining a flexible layout.
  • Mobile podiums for upper-grade levels encouraged interactive teaching, allowing teachers to move freely around the classroom while engaging with students.
  • For younger students, mobile markerboard easels provided a dynamic, hands-on way for students to participate in lessons.
  • Kidney tables for small group work, lateral tables, and bookcases for classroom libraries helped create inviting, functional spaces for both individual and group learning.

The Importance of “Day Two” Services

Moving into a new building comes with a learning curve. As students and staff settled into their new space, they quickly realized that small tweaks were necessary. Fre3dom Interiors’ “Day Two” services were an invaluable asset during this period. We continued to offer support, making adjustments and fine-tuning the setup to meet the evolving needs of the school community. This commitment to ongoing service was appreciated by both staff and students, who found that even small changes could make a big impact on their daily experiences.

A Space Designed to Evolve

Fre3dom Interiors took pride in ensuring Rushton Elementary’s new space not only met their needs on day one but was adaptable for the future. With flexible furniture options, ample storage solutions, and a collaborative approach to design, the school is now equipped to support the diverse learning styles of its students and foster a positive, engaging environment for everyone.

As the students and staff continue to settle in, Fre3dom Interiors remains a trusted partner, ready to support the school’s evolving needs as they grow into their new home.
